How to Break Up with Bank of America

This was a long time coming, but I find that summers tend to be a little more personally productive for me anyway. When I realized (thanks to the MTRR) that BoA, while convenient and patriotic (it's in all 50 states now! it's red, white and blue!), is evil for its continued investment of millions of dollars into coal industry giants such as Massey and Arch as they perpetuate the tragedy of mountaintop removal all over Appalachia, I decided that it was time to break up with this soulless, spineless blob of income-sucking corporation-vomit.

I'm still stuck with my credit card payment, sadly, but not for much longer. And in the meantime I can finally start being an adult with my money and look for banks that invest it in the ways I want it invested, plump returns or no. A bank that funds sustainable organic farming in local New England would be cool. So would a bank that funds the creation of extremely expensive hand-crafted pumps. As a shareholder, I feel I would need to get a very tangible cut of that deal...

Never one to not cite my sources, I encourage you all to check out RAN - Rainforest Action Network for the backstory on Bank of America. I understand that some might argue I should put a little more research effort into my political stances but hey, I'm a busy girl. I'll take my facts how I like 'em: impassioned, uncorroborated and underdog.

And yeah, did you know that the Appalachian region is considered a temperate rainforest? Like, whoa.

Harsh letter. Doesn't it feel good, though?
